VonHoffmann was founded in 1903. By the early 1960s, it had not been engaged in the printing of educational books, its pillar business. In the late 1990s, the company began acquiring supplementary businesses. VonHoffmann Press and two companies set up the Commercial Printing Division, named VonHoffmann Graphics GmbH (VHG), one of them formerly known as Custom Printing, located at MD Frederick.

Frederick's factory area is concentrated on the East Coast where it resembles major warehouses and distribution centers. When someone asked Ed Jacobs, vice president of business, about the most valuable work they did at the factory, he mentioned IBM's marketing program. They produced two sets of books (including covers) and newsletters for IBM and completed the entire post-processing work. According to Jacobs, in the past, their equipment was only able to complete printing and provide paperback books for outside processing companies. This time we provided our customers with a complete solution. We not only printed two sets of books, but also covers and newsletters. We also completed post-processing through the choice of IBM.

The increase in equipment capacity is partly due to the fact that the company has invested a total of about 100 million U.S. dollars in infrastructure over the past three years for equipment upgrades. In Frederick, VGG installed a GBC film gluer and installed the CreoScitex/Heidelberg Prinergy workflow in November to ensure that the Frederick factory is compatible with other printing equipment. A Timsons T48A printer was later installed. VHG focuses on short-to-medium editions of paperback books (an average of 7,000). Looking ahead, VonHoffmann has great opportunities in the computer trading market.

Jacobs pointed out that too many new software and games have increased the customer's demand for printed instruction manuals.

The Internet, a place where nature seeks digital information, does not seem to provide the right solution for all types of printing. Jacobs said that the most suitable job is the same and needs a relatively quick turnaround.

“The new version of the product is a must for customers, and we need to respond to this in a timely manner,” Jacobs said. “Including FTP for customers to transfer files, and FTP and Prinergy to combine numbers in a matter of days. The document was passed to Creo Trendsetter and the press."

VonHoffmann will also continue to invest in infrastructure and expand production capacity. We expect the Frederick plant to provide complete solutions for companies with complex projects in the coming years.
