3DsMAX7.5 Hair Effects: Hairy Toy Puppy

In this tutorial we will use the new hair function of 3DsMAX7.5 to add fluff to a toy puppy, and then trim it to achieve the effect we need. In this case we will focus on how to adjust the size of the polygon to produce different Length of hair effect.

In this scene we provide a model of a cartoon puppy, this model is built using a cuboid, and we added a grid to it. Smooth effect, by adding a mesh smoothing effect will produce smaller polygons where the length of the hair is needed, such as the puppy's legs, so that the resulting hair is more realistic.

Add a hair modifier and choose a preset scheme: first select the puppy model in the scene, then click the Modify button to enter the modify command panel, select World-Space Modifiers in the modifier list, and then Click to select Hair And Fur (Wsm), then we add a hair modifier to the puppy, and the hair will grow from the puppy model in red lines.

First, trimming the hair effect

1. In the command panel, under the Tools rollout, click Style Hair. This opens the hairstyle creation interface. In the default state, all guide lines are perpendicular to the model surface and have the same length. , rotate the view to the angle shown in Figure 1-1. By observing, we found that the guide line is straight at the beginning.

2. Click the Attenuate attenuation button in the toolbar of the hair styling interface. The length of the hair is determined by the size of the polygon it grows. On the actual animal body, the higher the body detail, the shorter the hair, such as the puppy. The head is like this

3. Now we rotate the view to the side of the puppy. While holding down the Alt key, use the middle button of the mouse to rotate the view. We can also do this by holding down Ctrl+R and moving the mouse.

4, change the size of the brush, hold down the B button and move the mouse until the size of the brush is about 1/3 of the puppy.

5. On the toolbar of the hairstyle creation interface, click the Select By Hair Ends button.

6, the following in the dog's body according to the direction in which the hair should flow, because we use a large soft brush, so you can get a very smooth transition effect, and then use a smaller brush to adjust, such as Figure 1-3 shows the puppy after partial combing.

7. After combing one or two times, press the R button (Recomb/Recombine) to re-card. By re-combing, the guide wire can be leveled. The function of the Recomb re-combing function is to adsorb the hair we have just brushed onto the surface of the object. Cut the line, but its length and direction will remain the same, as shown in Figure 1-4.

8. Repeat the above steps until we get a satisfactory hair flow effect. Figure 1-5 shows the effect of further grooming the hair after re-combing.
