Welcome to the newly updated Key Developments, now published twice a week and featuring a broader range of news beyond just COVID-19. While we’re still seeing a lot of pandemic-related updates, we’re gradually expanding the scope of these posts as we move forward.
As of now, there are over 22.2 million confirmed global cases of COVID-19. The number has increased by more than 1.8 million in the past week, showing a continued acceleration in growth. Globally, there have been over 782,000 deaths. In the U.S., there are more than 5.6 million cases and over 174,000 deaths, with about 1,000 fatalities reported daily. The U.S., Brazil, and India remain the top three countries for new cases. Mexico is third globally in total deaths, with over 57,000 recorded. The global death rate is also rising again.
According to recent reports, 9,985 coronavirus deaths were recorded on Friday, marking the largest single-day increase since the start of the pandemic. This includes 3,658 additional deaths in Peru.
Mental health concerns continue to rise, with anxiety, depression, and suicidal thoughts significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. Some of this can be directly linked to the stress caused by the virus and its impact on daily life. Self-reported rates of anxiety and depression are two to three times higher than usual. A CDC survey found that 25.5% of Americans aged 18–24 considered suicide in the past 30 days, highlighting the deep emotional toll of the crisis.
The Senate is unlikely to pass a new pandemic relief bill before September, and there’s still no federal contact-tracing program in place. Meanwhile, the CDC recently stated that immunity after infection likely lasts at least three months, though long-term protection remains unclear.
New saliva-based tests are being developed and could offer a less invasive alternative to nasal swabs. These tests show similar accuracy and are easier to administer, making them a promising advancement in testing accessibility.
Amazon is offering relocation assistance to some Seattle employees, reflecting how the pandemic is reshaping work, housing, and urban living. Meanwhile, delays in test processing remain a major issue—over 40% of tests take longer than three days, which reduces their effectiveness in controlling spread. Some companies, like Quest Diagnostics, are working to cut processing times to one or two days.
On a lighter note, there's a growing pepperoni shortage due to supply chain disruptions, which has left many pizza lovers upset. And in another twist, Pizza Hut is closing 300 locations across the U.S.
In California, extreme heat has led to rolling blackouts as energy demand surges. For those relying on medical equipment at home, such outages can be dangerous. Patients using oxygen should ensure they have portable units available.
