Electrochemical Characteristics of SRB Microorganism Induced Corrosion Using Wire Beam Electrode

The effects of SRB and biofilm on the corrosion of Q235 low carbon steel in semi-continuous medium were studied by using tow electrodes. The non-uniformity characteristics of biofilms, as well as the relationship between open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and incubation time were tested by potential, current and impedance scanning techniques. It was found that the open circuit potential was negatively shifted with the growth of the biofilm. Since the sulfide produced by SRB metabolism in the biofilm is electrically conductive, surface potential scanning can no longer be used as a criterion for local corrosion under biofilm, but surface impedance scanning can detect local corrosion under the film. EIS shows that the biofilm has a very large capacitance (104 to 105 μF/cm2), and the membrane capacitance increases with S type over time, while the solution resistance and charge transfer resistance decrease exponentially.
