[Equipment knowledge] How to judge the quality of outdoor sportswear fabrics

Outdoor sports have been introduced to China for over a decade and have become a popular trend. Among these, outdoor clothing has gained a significant market share. White-collar workers and higher-income groups are increasingly focusing on the functionality and comfort of their attire, which has led to the rise of functional outdoor wear. The concept of "function" refers to the beneficial effects or capabilities of something. Functional clothing aims to maximize the utility of garments. In particular, outdoor functional clothing is designed to perform well in harsh environments. Due to the complexity of its manufacturing processes, such clothing often comes with a high price tag. Brands like Columbia and The North Face, for example, can cost thousands of dollars, but this is largely due to years of research, quality control, and brand value accumulation. There are two main types of outdoor fabrics: one for sports activities and another for leisure use. Sports-grade fabrics are typically used in mountaineering gear, ski suits, and jackets. These materials are rugged, stiff in texture, and built for performance in extreme conditions. They must meet strict international standards, such as those set by ITSSGS, ensuring durability and protection. Domestic brands, however, often lack such rigorous testing requirements. On the other hand, leisure outdoor fabrics are more casual and stylish, with soft textures and comfortable fits. These are ideal for everyday outdoor activities and prioritize aesthetics alongside functionality. To evaluate the quality and performance of outdoor clothing, several key fabric tests are conducted. These include shrinkage rate, seam slippage, tensile strength, tear resistance, pH level, water resistance, moisture permeability, UV protection, and more. Each of these tests ensures that the clothing can withstand the demands of outdoor environments. The production of outdoor fabrics involves advanced processing techniques such as waterproofing, coating, lamination, and more. These methods enhance properties like breathability, wind resistance, and UV protection. As a textile technician with four years of experience, I’ve analyzed various fabric specifications and found that maintaining high-quality control during production is essential. When it comes to the raw materials, the quality of the yarn plays a crucial role. Stronger yarn leads to better tear resistance and durability, which is vital for outdoor use. Additionally, the dyeing and finishing processes must meet specific standards. For example, the pH level should be within 4.5–7.5 to match human skin’s natural acidity, preventing irritation. Other factors like color fastness, shrinkage, and light resistance are also critical. International standards like AATCC and ASTM are widely used, while Chinese standards tend to be less strict. This gap in requirements affects the overall quality and performance of domestic outdoor clothing. In summary, outdoor functional clothing is not just about style—it's about performance, durability, and safety. Whether you're hiking, skiing, or simply enjoying the outdoors, choosing the right fabric can make all the difference.
