Nankai University successfully developed new low-mercury catalyst technology for the production of PVC

Prof. Li Wei from the School of Chemistry of Nankai University successfully developed a new low-mercury catalyst technology for PVC synthesis. At present, it has completed industrial batch preparation and obtained industrial applications in many domestic PVC enterprises.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) resin is one of the five thermoplastic synthetic resins and one of the earliest varieties of plastics in the world to be industrially produced. It is widely used in daily life. However, at present, the production of domestic PVC mainly relies on the calcium carbide acetylene method based on coal, and the use of mercury chloride catalyst is required in the production process. The large-scale use of mercury-containing catalysts not only causes the rapid depletion of mercury mine resources in China, but more importantly, it will bring extremely harsh environmental pollution.

Li Wei introduced that in the face of the severe shortage of mercury resources and environmental pollution, the research and development of non-mercury catalysts is a fundamental solution to the bottleneck of the development of the PVC industry, and is related to the survival and development of the entire industry. Under this circumstance, the research team has been engaged in the research of green chemical reaction and the development of mercury-free catalysts for many years, and cooperated with important PVC production enterprises in China to focus on the catalytic system and reaction system of calcium carbide in calcium carbide process. The verification of the test experiment has formed a set of non-mercury catalytic complete technical solutions with industrial feasibility, which provides technical support for the fundamental solution to the mercury pollution in the calcium carbide industry in China and the non-mercury.

The new products have been unanimously recognized in the industry expert appraisal meeting, and have entered the stage of market launch. More than 100 tons of catalyst have been loaded on the 10,000-ton PVC industrial plant, and more than 100,000 tons of qualified products have been produced. At present, the more green and environmentally friendly mercury-free catalyst technology researched by the research team is conducting pilot tests in domestic PVC leading enterprises, and progress is progressing smoothly.

It is reported that the project has been supported by a number of funds such as the National “863” Program, and has applied for a number of Chinese invention patents and has been authorized. Under the leadership of Li Wei, the members of the research team have completed more than ten transformations of various industrial achievements, creating an output value of nearly 1.6 billion yuan.
