Amid growing concerns about formaldehyde levels in the furniture and decoration industries, Changjiang Furniture introduced the concept of "zero formaldehyde" furniture, drawing widespread attention.
In early 2008, the company launched the first office furniture in China that emits zero formaldehyde. This innovation significantly reduced harm to human health and the environment. The product was tested and certified by 13 authoritative institutions across the country, and the zero formaldehyde technology has since been widely adopted in the national furniture industry.
**"How do we achieve zero formaldehyde?"** asked Hu Wen. Jiang explained that the company strictly controls the materials it purchases and stores, conducting thorough tests for harmful substances like free formaldehyde. It also established a dedicated testing center for raw materials. Additionally, Changjiang improved its coating materials by using water-based paints that are free from organic solvents, benzene, toluene, xylene, and formaldehyde, making them non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
**Continuous Improvement and Pursuit of Excellence**
Today, the furniture industry faces challenges such as overcapacity, intense competition, rising material costs, and increasing labor expenses. These factors have created obstacles for many companies. However, Jiang believes there is no shortcut—quality must remain the core of every business decision.
In 2010, Changjiang Furniture supplied a bank in Jiangxi Province with office furniture. One of the chairs met national standards, but internal testing revealed that the armrest could break when sat on. Considering the potential risk to users, the company immediately recalled all over 300 chairs, incurring nearly 500,000 yuan in direct losses. Despite the financial hit, the company gained the trust and appreciation of its customers.

Throughout the conversation, Jiang often repeated the phrase, **"Don’t seek to be big, just seek to do well."** This reflects his philosophy of running the business. Taking the formaldehyde emission standard as an example, China’s limit is 9 mg per 100g, while the U.S. standard is 0.09 ppm—a significant difference. Similarly, the EU limits benzene, toluene, and xylene in paint to less than 0.1%, whereas China’s standards lag behind.
Jiang believes that standardization and management should be embedded in every aspect of enterprise development. He strongly advocates for high standards and strict requirements to ensure quality.
