American Institute Uses Potatoes to Make Plastic Films

The U.S. Institute has developed a biodegradable plastic film made from potatoes and whey. The biggest advantage of this plastic film is that it can be broken down into harmless lactic acid.
According to reports, the plastic film manufacturing method is to first convert sesame into a glucose syrup after forming whey when making cheese, and then to form a lactic acid-containing liquid through bacterial fermentation. The cheese in the liquid is separated by electrodialysis and heated to evaporate water, leaving behind the polylactic acid molecules that can be made into films and coatings. The plastic film thus produced can be used as a fresh-keeping bag and replaces a packaging material coated with polyethylene and waterproof wax.
