Europe's three major North Wall: Eiger data [Photos]
Eiger

Eiger is located in the south of Interlaken in Switzerland. It is one of the highest peaks of the Alps in Switzerland. It is 3970 meters above sea level and stands side by side with the famous Jungfrau and Mönch peaks. It constitutes the most spectacular three scenic spots in the Bernese Oberland. Eiger is a mountain of fragile limestone that stands in the green valley basin of Grindelwald. Its north side is unusually steep, and its cutting-edge cliffs can't even accumulate in white snow. The average slope is 70 degrees and the vertical distance is 1800 meters. People who dare to challenge this set of numbers need superb climbing skills and outstanding people. Courage is a recognized obstacle for international mountaineering. Eiger is regarded as the "Europe's first dangerous peak" because of its steep mountains, and it is also known as the "European Big Three North Wall" with the Matterhorn and Greater Jos. In 1938, mountaineers from Germany and Austria successfully climbed the Eiger from the North Wall for the first time.

As early as the yearbook of 1252, the Eiger was called "Mons Egere" and was derived from the German word "hej Ger" (meaning "spear"). In the French-speaking area, Eiger is often referred to as "Ogre" (meaning "cannibal"). The cogwheel train completed in 1912 leads from the interior of the mountain to Jungfrau Railway Station. In the middle of the tunnel there are stations called "Eigerwand" and "Eismeer" (ice sea) on the little-known ridge.

Climbing history:

On August 11, 1858, Irishman Charles Barrington made his first appearance on the Eiger mountain on the west side. The two guides Christian Almer and Peter Bohren who accompanied the amateur climber were from Grindelwald. This line is still a standard line so far, and its classification level is "difficult." A few days before climbing the Eiger, Barrington, who had just returned from his journey to conquer Jungfrau, wanted to find a really challenging trip. The answer he got was: "Try the Eiger or the Matterhorn!" Charles did not go to Zermatt after successfully climbing the Eiger. This is indeed a very regrettable thing. His name could have been more dazzling in the history of the Alps.

In 1864, the British Lucy Walker became the first woman to reach the Eiger. Her guide is still from Melchior Anderegg in the Bernese Oberland. It took them about 90 hours to complete this feat, accompanied by Walker's family and other guides. In Victorian England, it was unbelievable for a man and a woman to be alone in a mountain or climbing camp. When someone asked why the female pioneer was not married, her answer was this: "I love Takayama and Melchior--but he is married!"
